Indian Captain Rohit Sharma surpassed New Zealand’s Martin Guptill’s record for most T20I sixes on Friday. Rohit beat Guptill’s record in the second Twenty20 match of the three-game series against Australia at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur.
The India captain hit four sixes during a run chase of 91 runs in eight overs, taking his tally to 176 sixes in this format. Rohit Sharma stayed not out with 46 runs off of 20 balls, while Dinesh Karthik scored 10 runs off of 02 balls.
Guptill follows him with 172 sixes and Chris Gayle with 124 sixes. Virat Kohli is the only other Indian batsman with more than 100 T20I sixes. He currently has 104 sixes in the format.
Last month, Rohit had gone past Guptill’s run total in the format. Later on, he went on to become the only men’s player with over 3,500 T20I runs. Rohit has played 138 matches in the format.
Rohit’s knock in a shortened encounter in Nagpur helped India get off to a strong start against Australia. Australia scored 90 runs in five overs while batting first, but Rohit and KL Rahul scored 39 runs in 2.5 overs to get India off to a strong start.
Rohit Sharma will have the chance to increase his lead in the next Twenty20 match against Australia. The third Twenty20 International of the series will be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday.
