Bangladesh has announced its 15-man squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, which will be held in Australia, but one big name is missing from the list.
Mahmud Ullah, Bangladesh’s former captain, was dropped from the squad for the T20 World Cup in 2022, which will be led by Shakib Al Hasan. Bangladesh has made a lot of changes to the team that didn’t win a single game at the Asia Cup.
Apart from Mahmudullah, Parvez Hossain Emon, Anamul Haque, Mahedi Hasan, and Mohammad Naim, all of whom were part of the Asia Cup squad, did not make a place in the T20 World Cup team. They have been replaced by Litton Das, Yasir Ali, Nurul Hasan, Hasan Mahmud, and Najmul Hossain Shanto.
Due to a hamstring injury that he sustained while on tour in Zimbabwe, Das did not participate in the Asia Tournament. Both he and Nurul, who had to undergo medical treatment for a finger injury, have made a full recovery.
“We have respect for Mahmudullah, who has played well for the national team. “Our T20 consultant gave us a plan for the next year that will take us in a different direction,” said Minhajul Abedin, the head selector. “We have decided to follow this plan. We haven’t done well in this format, and we’ve had to deal with lots of injuries over the last six months. “We have dropped Mahmudullah after taking everyone’s opinion.”
Sridharan Sriram, Bangladesh T20’s technical consultant, said: “I think our cricket team needs to have a succession plan. I have always equated Mahmudullah with MS Dhoni and the role that he performs for the team. He batted at No. 6, just like Dhoni has done for India. He has finished off games. Dhoni cannot go on forever and ever, right?
“You need to have a succession plan for who after Mahmudullah.” I think this was the right time to think of someone who can fill in Mahmudullah’s big shoes. Unless we start playing players in that role, we won’t find them,” Sriram further said. “It is never an easy conversation. He is the most capped T20 player in Bangladesh. I have the utmost respect for him. I have to be the bad man to have the conversation. I think it went well,” he said.
Along with Rishad Hossain and Shak Mahedi Hasan, Soumya Sarkar and Shoriful Islam, who were both members of Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup squad last year, only got places on the standby list.
